CSE Seminar Topic on Liquid. Virtualization is becoming widely deployed in servers to efficiently provide many logically separate execution environments while reducing the need for physical servers. A virtual machine is a mechanism to run multiple operating systems on a single computer system. With its rich set of features it forms an important and crucial component in cloud computing. Virtual Machine image storage is a challenging problem and issues like performance, deduplication, resiliency. 

 Deduplication is a data compression technology that can be used to eliminate duplicate copies of replicated data and thus reducing the amount of storage required for a set of files which has parts of content as similar. This can significantly reduce the amount of storage space in case when the major parts of the files are same, like virtual machine image, files of versioning systems etc. Further requests for a data that already exists in the system will not result in the content being written again, instead identity of the existing chunk will be recorded thus reducing the cost, time and improving efficiency.

Liquid File System is a deduplication file system designed for large scale virtual machine deployment. Its design provides:

1. Fast Virtual Machine deployment with peer-to-peer (P2P) data transfer
2. Low storage consumption by means of deduplication on Virtual Machine images
3. Instant cloning for Virtual Machine images
4. On-demand fetching through a network
5. Caching with local disks by copy-on-read techniques
